I have two addictions: the great outdoors and snowy mountains. Whenever I get to go on a trip to the Alps, I feel like a little child that is going to visit Santa. For me, one day out in the mountains feels like a whole week of vacation.
Sölden – the center of the Ötztal Arena
Un-usual. There is probably no better description for the Ötztal valley. Un-usual nature treasures ranging from lush meadow to eternal ice fields at 3,772 meters above sea level. Un-usual people with plenty of pioneering spirit and huge creative power have made this valley an internationally renowned region. Un-usual holidays for all guests. New energy and joys of life. Highlights in abundance.
Sölden is a popular hotspot in the Alps. Sölden, thats fun, entertainment and pure winter bliss. 34 mountain lifts up to 3,000 meters and above await you. 150 kilometers of immaculate ski slobes with snow guarantee offer varied winter highlights: The Big 3, three 3,000 meters-high mountains accessible by mountain lifts.
Glacier Skiing in Sölden
Skiing at its finest on one of Austria’s largest glacier areas. Rettenbach Glacier and Tiefenbach Glacier feature perfectly groomed slopes surrounded by the stunning Alpine scenery. The Glacier Ski Areas are easily accessible by bus or car, following the highest » Panorama Road within the entire Eastern Alps. (Length: 14 km from Sölden to the Glacier).
Both Glaciers are connected to each other by the scenic, 1,7 km long “Rosi Mittermeier Road Tunnel”. Skiers can take advantage of the oustanding Ski Tunnel, situated at 3,240 m above sea level, that guarantees a quick and easy change from Rettenbach Glacier to Tiefenbach Glaciergletscher.
8 state-of-the-art ski lifts and gondolas with an average capacity of 16,500 persons per hour and 34.3 km of immaculate ski runs ensure perfect skiing holidays, especially in autumn and early winter. As Tiefenbach Glacier is characterized by its gently rolling and broad slopes, it makes a truly unique haven for beginners or all those who prefer skiing at a more leisurely place. Rettenbach Glacier boasts challenging terrain for advanced skiers.
Experts can improve their skills on the slopes, where every year late in Octrober, the FIS Alpine Skiing World Cup celebrates the season’s opening with the first men’s and women’s ski races.Watch out of the wide range of Events ski and equipment tests taking place on all weekends in autumn!
Worth a long weekend
I personally LOVE the scenery and can recommend a long weekend in the Ötztal. However, I would not recommend staying in Sölden directly. For me, it is way too touristy, too crowded, too much party life and too expensive.
Make sure to pick one of the smaller villages, if you are looking for some peace and quiet time.
My recommendation: Make sure to stop by at the restaurant Mesner Stuben in Längenfeld. I totally digg their warm and cordial atmosphere, they have the best “Schnitzel” in that area, the service is excellent and the prices are fair.
