Großglockner is the highest mountain in Austria with an altitude of 3.798m and surrounded by 30 more mountains with 3000m and above. A beautiful high alpine road brings you to several holiday routes and is located within the national park Hohe Tauern. I totally love this area: the mountains and glaciers, its geology and history – it’s truly magical!

But before planning your trip you should check if the pass is open because during the winter season it is very likely that some parts might be closed due to weather conditions. You could even go there by bike but I recommend not to do it during summer holidays – and, if possible, go early in the morning so that the road is not too busy.

Some hot spots on the high alpine road which you shouldn’t miss:

Edelweiss-Spitze, the highest vantage point (2.571m) with a panoramic view of more of the other high mountains stated above.

Kaiser-Franz-Josef Höhe (2.369m), lookout point with a direct view of the Grossglockner and Pasterze. A Visitors Center with exhibitions, the National Park Information Office, view of the mountains/wildlife and some panorama trails are available from there.

– If you are interested in geology and wildlife in this area, the nature educational trail might be interesting for you, in addition to the museum at Haus Alpine Naturschau.

Generally, the whole area around Grossglockner is well known for all different kinds of spors. Tons of hiking trails are available for you and the respective tourist information in each of the villages will be happy to find the right one for you. I recently spent a week in this area and I can tell you that I went running, hiking, biking and … hold on … already SNOWBOARDING. Nope, I am not kidding! Ok, it’s only Oktober but at Kitzsteinhorn, a glacier at the outer edge of the national park Hohe Tauern, there is this special snowboarding location which is only closed from July till the beginning of October. So, if you are like me and can’t wait for a beautiful winter wonderland, you will have the possibility to get some powder feeling already in autumn. And it is AWESOME. <3

But if you are more into spa and wellness during the cold season, I can recommend the Tauern Spa which is located in Kaprun. Several saunas together with a small gym, free fitness courses and even a 25m swimming pool invite you to have a good time.
